ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) is set to commence the construction of access roads at Kikonge Mine in Mufumbwe District, as Government intensifies efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining and restore order in the area. Former Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe said the move demonstrates Government’s commitment to structured and regulated mining operations, following growing security concerns linked to illegal mining activities. 

Hon Kabuswe warned that illegal mining in Mufumbwe had contributed to the emergence of small militia groups, describing the situation as alarming and a potential threat to national security, He emphasised that formalization of the artisanal mining sector remains the most sustainable solution to curbing illegal activities. The Minister further disclosed that Government has trained 470 mining cooperatives across two sites in Mufumbwe and  

Mpika representing approximately 47,000 individuals. The training focuses on responsible mining practices, environmental protection, safety compliance and value addition.
