MAAMBA SOLAR INJECTS FIRST POWER INTO NATIONAL GRID

Publication date: 28th September 2026

Maamba Solar Energy Limited (MSEL) has injected electricity into Zambia’s national grid for the first time, marking the start of commissioning of its 100 MWac Maamba Solar PV Project in Sinazongwe District, Southern Province.

The first power injection on 24 September 2026 marks a major milestone for the approximately US$90 million project, which is being developed by MSEL, a joint venture in which ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) holds a 35 percent equity stake, with Nava Global PTE Limited holding the remaining 65 percent.

Commenting on the milestone ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer Kakenenwa Muyangwa said the first power injection came at an important time for Zambia, given the potential pressure that El Niño conditions could place on hydropower generation.

He said the additional 100 MW of solar capacity would contribute to energy security while helping diversify Zambia’s generation mix and reduce reliance on a single source of electricity.

Mr Muyangwa added that ZCCM-IH’s investment in MSEL reflected its commitment to strategic energy projects capable of supporting economic growth and Zambia’s ambition of reaching 10,000 MW of electricity generation capacity

The project’s output has been contracted to ZESCO Limited under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement and is expected to contribute to Zambia’s energy security by adding renewable power to the national grid and supporting the diversification of the country’s energy mix
